It's been awhile!

We bring you Thai Tom, all the way from Seattle, WA.

Right inside the restaurant...

Tom hard at work.

Pad Thai, I think?

Broccoli Chicken

Some veggie dish.

The Review
I have to admit, Billy hyped this place up because of his brother, so I was expecting a LOT out of this small restaurant. However, upon seeing the place and the line, I knew this would be a good experience. Tom is this long-haired, fierce looking chef, who not only cooks every dish, but does it fiercely. He shoves the rice in the bowl fiercely, cracks his eggs fiercely (fastest egg cracker I've seen)... everything, fiercely. And the thing is, when you walk in, you would expect never to talk to this guy because he seems like he's one of those foreign dudes who just cooks. But right when we walked in, he goes, "Hey guys, thanks for waiting in the cold." Billy, Kwan, Dennis, and I were struck in disbelief. The guy is warm and personable, and the restaurant doesn't run without him. Hence, Thai Tom.

Pad Thai: 7/10 (Don't order a "4" in terms of spiciness--that killed my tongue)
Value: 9.7/10 (This was absolutely worth it... the best fatties experience up to now)

What an amazing experience. If I can somehow get the video of him being fierce on this site, I will.

Pete's Review

I have been meaning to review this place a long time ago. I really like this place. The thing that makes this place good is the value. You get a huge burrito or hamburger for 5 or 6 bucks plus you get unlimited orange bang and other Mexican drinks. The food is pretty heavy though. You feel pretty gross after.

Burrito: 7.5/10

Pastrami Burger: 8/10

Unlimited Mexican Drinks: 9.8/10

Amount of food: 9/10

Overall: 8.3/10

I've actually had a pretty eventful fatties winter break, so let's start in the wonderful town of Eagle Rock, at a place called Pete's.

It is your Lucky Boy/The Hat type of place in terms of what they sell.

Probably what makes Pete's special is that they have free refills on these Mexican drinks. Man, horchata's rock.

The menu out in front.

The Review
I would have to say that this place was not too much different from The Hat/Lucky Boy in terms of quality and quantity. Unless there's something wrong with me, I didn't notice much difference between the pastrami here and The Hat, which would be good for Pete's, because The Hat is popular for its pastrami. My brother told me that The Hat in Pasadena has unlimited refills on the Mexican drinks too, so that might make Pete's less special. But they do actually serve you the food here, and clean it up, which is a plus.

Burrito (I had a piece of Andy's): 7/10

Pastrami Burger: 7.5/10

Value: 7.6/10

The Bottom Line: If you're hungry, want a good amount of food, and also love Mexican drinks, this place doesn't fail. It's about on par with The Hat and Lucky Boy, so don't expect much difference.

For this post, let me apologize in advance for the lack of quality pictures (of food). The lighting was such that the flash made the food too bright, and no flash would made the pictures too blurry.

Friday was probably the biggest random outing i've ever been a part of. 17 people in four cars crossed the Bay Bridge and went over onto Cesar Chavez to go to Taqueria (El) Farolito.

The sign

Menu

I got a torta (carne asada) and a taco (carne asada)

A couple tacos (I'm not sure what the one on the left is; the one on the right looks carne asada)

A close-up of a taco (carne asada, looks like)

Four of the 17 people

And another handful

The Review
I have to admit, I came here with pretty high expectations because Dave Wee's brother said this place was freakin' good. The environment was a lot more lively than I thought it would be (maybe it was because we had 17 people), but I had fun just sitting around and taking in the environment. This place had a pretty long line, with people from young to old and white to black to asian.

The torta was pretty solid. I still would take the late Lupita's torta over it, but the jalapenos really added a kick, if you will, into the sandwich. The carne asada was actually a little different from your normal carne asada--this stuff was flat (kinda like the stuff you would get from Gilmok in LA), but it was good. A little too cheesy for me, but very good nonetheless. The tacos did not disappoint. I can't say that it was the "best" taco I've ever had, but you can't go wrong with this one. Lots of onions and cilantro. Throw in the red hot sauce, and the flavor will literally explode in your mouth.

Dennis said the taco was better than the burrito, so you can take his word for that.

The pricing was not your San Jose Taqueria pricing--the torta was $4.95 and the tacos were $1.95. A little pricey, but I would say this is worth the value. For me, it actually met my expectations.

Torta: 8.2/10
Taco: 8.4/10

I would recommend trying this place out. The long lines aren't there for nothing; the food is good. It is a distance from Berkeley (at least a 15 min drive---ask me if you want directions), but if you have time, make the drive sometime. The tortas are as good as I've had up here (actually the first, haha), and the tacos are very good as well. Throw in a lively atmosphere, and you got yourself a good experience.
